How to report someone on WhatsApp, and how to report a WhatsApp number when all you have is the digits

To report someone on WhatsApp, open your chat with them, tap their name, scroll down and tap Report, or Report and block. WhatsApp only takes reports from inside the app. A WhatsApp number you never chatted with can't be reported there, so it goes to a fraud line or the police.

The five taps that report someone on WhatsApp

Five taps, all inside the chat. The order below puts the screenshot first, because the report itself carries very little. WhatsApp's block and report help article says a report sends "up to five of the last messages" the person sent you. A scam that ran for two weeks won't fit in five messages.

  1. Screenshot the chat. Capture the messages, the number with its country code and any payment request. The report only carries five messages.
  2. Open the contact info. Open the chat and tap the name or number at the top. For a group member, tap their name inside the group first.
  3. Tap Report. Scroll to the bottom of the info screen and tap Report. For a group it reads Report group; for a shop, Report business.
  4. Choose whether to block. Report and block also stops their calls and messages. Report alone leaves the chat open.
  5. Take it outside if money or threats are involved. Send the screenshots to your bank, a fraud line or the police. WhatsApp can only act on the account.

This works the same on Android and iPhone, and on WhatsApp Web and desktop, which put Report at the bottom of the contact info panel. Android also adds Report to the chat's three-dot menu under More. On Android, the Block screen has a "Report to WhatsApp" box that is already ticked. Untick it if you only want silence.

Can you report a WhatsApp number you never chatted with?

No. You can report a WhatsApp number only from a chat, because a report is a copy of that chat's last messages. With nothing received, there is nothing to send. WhatsApp states that "the only way to report someone is to follow the in-app reporting process". Its web contact form takes privacy questions, not reports about other users. The chart below sorts the six things people usually hold when they want to report a WhatsApp number.

Report a WhatsApp number: which situations WhatsApp's in-app report covers, from a chat to bare digits
What you haveReport inside WhatsApp?What to do
A chat with the numberYesContact info, then Report or Report and block
A first message from an unsaved numberYesUse the Block or Report banner above the message
A member of a group you're inYesTap their name in the group, open the profile, then Report
Only the digits, from an ad, a post or a call log elsewhereNoGive the number to a fraud line or the police
A screenshot a friend forwardedPartlyYour friend reports from their chat; you keep the image as evidence
Your own number, taken overNoRecover the account first, then warn your contacts

The last row trips people up. WhatsApp's hacked-account article says that if you report the account you're trying to recover, "we might ban it". Get the number back with the six-digit code first, then tell family and friends that messages sent in the meantime weren't from you.

What happens when you report a WhatsApp number?

WhatsApp gets the five messages, basic details of your last five calls and the account ID, with the time and type of each message. Then it reviews the account. That is all that happens when we report on WhatsApp, as far as the reporter can see. No confirmation arrives, no case number, no follow-up. The reported person keeps using the app until WhatsApp decides otherwise.

Your copy of the chat doesn't change either. WhatsApp's reporting article warns that a report without a block "won't stop you from receiving their messages, calls, and status updates". If the number keeps writing, block it.

WhatsApp's own figures show how few user complaints become action. In its India monthly report for August 2026, WhatsApp logged 27,085 grievances through its grievance channel and acted on 472 of them. That covers formal complaints, not in-app reports, but the pattern holds. Evidence decides the outcome, and the number of people complaining doesn't.

How to report someone on WhatsApp without them knowing

No. "The user or group won't be notified," according to WhatsApp's help page, so reporting someone on WhatsApp without them knowing is the default. You don't need a setting for it. What can give you away is the block. A blocked person's messages stay on one grey tick, and your profile photo and last seen stop updating for them. A report without a block leaves no trace at all.

X and Instagram also keep the reporter's name out of rule reports, with exceptions for legal and copyright notices. Those exceptions are set out in the guide to whether someone learns you reported them on Instagram or X.

How do you report a fake WhatsApp account or a scam contact number?

The tap is the same Report button. What changes is the order of work. For a fake WhatsApp account using your name or photo, screenshot the profile picture, the About text and any message it sent while pretending to be you. Then report it. Ask the friends it wrote to, because they hold the chats, and only a chat can be reported. If the photo came from your public profile, getting a photo of you removed from Instagram and X deals with the source.

To report a WhatsApp scam contact number, keep the full chat before you block. Your bank and the police need the payment details and the whole conversation, not five messages. Fake job offers, "wrong number" openers and investment groups all start this way. To report WhatsApp fraud where money left your account, call the bank first, since recall windows are measured in hours. Many of these numbers are advertised on social media first, and reporting the Instagram scammer behind the number takes down the ad that sent people to WhatsApp.

How do you report a spam group or one selling illegal products?

Tap the group name, scroll down, tap Report group. That report sends the group's last five messages, and WhatsApp says "no one in the group will know about the report". What happens when you report a WhatsApp group that surprises people is the exit. Reporting removes you from the group. On iPhone the choice is Report and exit or Report, and Android offers an exit-and-delete box.

For a spam group that keeps adding you, report it, then go to Settings, Privacy, Groups and choose My contacts. That stops strangers adding you again. For a group selling drugs, weapons, stolen cards or fake documents, the five-message report goes to WhatsApp and the evidence goes to the police. Screenshot the price lists, the admin numbers and the invite link before you report, because you lose access the moment you do.

Counterfeit goods are a separate case. A group selling fake branded products is better handled by the brand owner through an intellectual-property complaint. Who has the right to file a copyright takedown explains who that can be. When the same seller advertises on Instagram, reporting the Instagram post that advertises it reaches a platform that can read the post.

Report a WhatsApp number to cyber crime: routes by country

To your country's police cyber crime or fraud service, because WhatsApp can ban a number but can't trace money. The routes differ by country. Each one asks for the number with its country code, screenshots with timestamps and any transaction IDs.

Report WhatsApp number to cyber crime: routes in the United States, United Kingdom and India
  • India: to report a WhatsApp number to cyber crime after a loss, call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in. Chakshu on Sanchar Saathi is for suspected fraud messages only, with no money lost.
  • United States: the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center takes online fraud and extortion. The FTC's ReportFraud takes attempts too.
  • United Kingdom: Report Fraud, online or on 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101. The 7726 short code takes SMS only, not WhatsApp messages.

Threats to share intimate images are a crime in all three countries. Don't pay, and don't block until the threats are saved. When the blackmailer first approached on Instagram, reporting Instagram blackmail and sextortion covers that account.

Can a report get a WhatsApp account banned?

Only if the messages show a breach. People search for how to report a WhatsApp account and get it banned as if the report were a lever. WhatsApp says a report "won't necessarily result in us banning the user". It reviews the account, and the reported messages are the main thing it can see in an encrypted app. One report with five threatening or fraudulent messages carries weight. Many reports on harmless messages carry none.

Most bans don't start with a user report at all. The same India report counted 6,202,400 accounts banned in August 2026, and 1,690,800 of them were removed proactively, before anyone complained. That is 27%, caught by WhatsApp's own detection of bulk and automated messaging.

So the honest way to raise the odds is evidence, not volume. Every person the number wrote to can report their own chat, and each of those reports carries different messages. Asking friends to report a number that never wrote to them adds nothing, because their reports have nothing in them. When a ban does land, the account owner sees a notice and can request a review, which WhatsApp says usually finishes within 24 hours.

I reported a WhatsApp by mistake. Can I un-report it?

No. WhatsApp has no withdraw button, and there is no way to un-report someone on WhatsApp. If the report went with a block, open the chat, scroll down and tap Unblock, or find the number under Settings, Privacy, Blocked contacts. The relationship goes back to normal from that point. Anything they sent while blocked is lost.

The report itself is usually harmless. It carries the last five messages, and a mistaken report on an ordinary chat shows WhatsApp ordinary messages. Nobody is told, and nothing in it says you meant to report them. If you're worried, tell the person. There's no support desk to call, much as X runs no phone line for this either, as X's phone and postal contact details make clear.

When the number also runs an X or Instagram account

WhatsApp reports cover the number. The same person often posts the number publicly, in an X reply, a bio or a pinned post. Those posts are visible to the platform, which makes them easier to act on than an encrypted chat. On X there's no inbox for these complaints, and the X contact routes that replace a support email list the forms that exist. If X starts refusing your reports or replies for a while, that's often a counter rather than a penalty, and what a rate limit on X means shows how long those last.

Whichever platform it is, keep the same order. Save the evidence, report through the official route, then block.

FAQ

Can I report a WhatsApp number without a chat?

Not inside WhatsApp. Its help pages say the only way to report someone is the in-app process, and that process sends messages from a chat. With only the digits, give the number to a fraud line or the police instead.

Will they know I reported their WhatsApp number?

No. WhatsApp says the user or group won't be notified. If you also block, they may notice their messages stop at one grey tick, but nothing names you as the reporter.

What happens when you report a WhatsApp number?

WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages that number sent you, basic details of your last five calls and the account ID. It reviews the account against its Terms. You hear nothing back, and a ban isn't guaranteed.

How do I report WhatsApp fraud after I've paid?

Call your bank first, then file with the fraud or cyber crime service in your country: 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in in India, ic3.gov in the US, Report Fraud in the UK. Report and block the number in WhatsApp last, after the whole chat is saved.

Can I un-report someone on WhatsApp?

No. A sent report can't be withdrawn. If you blocked by mistake, open the chat and tap Unblock. A mistaken report on harmless messages gives WhatsApp nothing to act on.

Does reporting a WhatsApp group remove me from it?

Yes. Reporting a group takes you out of it, and no member is told who reported. Report one member from their profile if you want to stay in the group.

How many reports does it take to ban a WhatsApp account?

WhatsApp publishes no number. It says a report won't necessarily lead to a ban. What counts is whether the five messages show a breach of its Terms, so one report with clear evidence beats many reports without it.
