How to report a video on Tik Tok, and where its copyright route parts ways with X

To report a video on TikTok, press and hold it or tap Share, choose Report, pick the reason and tap Submit. That handles rule breaks. If the video is your own work reposted, that is TikTok copyright infringement, and it goes through the copyright form instead, which passes your contact details to the uploader.

TikTok video report or copyright notice: who may file, what the uploader learns, what happens next

Rule report or copyright notice: what is wrong with the video?

Start with what bothers you, not with the button. A video that bullies, scams, shows nudity or spreads hate breaks the Community Guidelines, and anyone who sees it can report it. A video that reuses your footage, your song or your photo breaks no guideline by itself. It is an intellectual property problem, and TikTok only acts on it when the owner or someone acting for the owner files.

What is wrongRouteWho may fileDoes the uploader learn who?
Harassment, scam, nudity, violence, hateReport buttonAnyoneNo
Your clip, music or photo repostedCopyright formOwner or authorised agentContact details may be shared
Your brand name or logo misusedTrademark formMark holder or agentYes, in most cases
Someone posing as youImpersonation report or formYou or your representativeNo

Getting this wrong costs time. A copyright complaint sent through the Report button is judged against the guidelines, and a reposted dance clip usually passes them. A rude video sent to the copyright team is rejected as outside its scope.

How to report a video on tik tok from the app or the web

TikTok's post reporting article describes one path for every video and photo post. These five steps are the whole answer to how to report a TikTok video, how do you report a video on TikTok and how do I report a TikTok video:

  1. Find the video. Open the video in the TikTok app, or on tiktok.com in a browser.
  2. Open the menu. Press and hold the video, or tap the Share arrow. On the web, hover over it and click More options.
  3. Tap Report. Choose Report from the menu that opens.
  4. Pick the reason. Choose the rule it breaks and any subtopic TikTok asks for. Intellectual property sends you on to the copyright form.
  5. Submit. Tap Submit. The report then sits under Report records in the Safety Center.

The spelling makes no difference. How to report a tik tok video, how to report video on TikTok and a plain "tiktok report video" search all describe this same menu. To report videos on TikTok in bulk, you report each one; there's no multi-select for other people's posts. Comments are the exception, because a creator can report up to 100 at once on their own video.

Can you report a TikTok video without the app? Yes. On tiktok.com the More options menu has the same Report entry, and the online feedback form at tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback opens without a login. If the uploader blocked you, that form is how you report a video on TikTok you can no longer see.

If you report a video on TikTok, is it anonymous?

For a rule report, yes. TikTok's reporting guide says it "will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you're reporting", and a removal notice tells the creator which rule was broken, never who reported. TikTok itself does know: the report is tied to your account, which is how updates reach your inbox.

A copyright notice is not anonymous. The form says your contact information may be shared with the person who posted the content. X goes further. Its copyright policy says the poster receives the full notice, including the filer's name, address, phone number and email, and suggests using an agent if that is a concern. Instagram follows a similar pattern, and who may file an Instagram DMCA takedown sets out its version.

TikTok copyright infringement: what the form asks for

When we opened the TikTok copyright form in September 2026, we saw it ask for email verification before showing a single field. After that it wants to know whether you're the owner or authorised to act for one, what kind of work it is (video, original music, non-music audio, photo, logo or other), and where the original lives: your own TikTok, a client's, or outside TikTok.

  • a 350-character box for a link to your original
  • an evidence upload of up to 20 MB
  • a 35,000-character box for the links you're reporting, so dozens of reposts fit in one notice
  • an optional box asking TikTok to prevent future copies
  • three statements and a signature in your full legal name

So can you get copyright on TikTok for your own clips? You already have it. Copyright arises when you create the work, and the TikTok copyright form is how you enforce it. Trademarks are different: brand names need a registration, which is why the trademark eligibility rules on Instagram and X turn away pending applications.

Is a TikTok copyright claim the same as a TikTok DMCA notice?

In the US, yes in substance. The form collects what section 512 of the Copyright Act requires: the work, the infringing links, a good-faith statement, an accuracy statement and a signature. TikTok Inc. also lists a designated agent in the US Copyright Office's DMCA agent directory, at copyright@tiktok.com and an address in Culver City, California.

That email exists for legal reasons. TikTok's own pages point only to the form and to in-app reporting, and its Intellectual Property Policy, in force since 26 April 2025, lists no email at all. A TikTok DMCA notice by email is lawful, but the form is faster and attaches your links in the format TikTok's team works from.

Outside the US, the same form handles copyright claims under local law. The policy names both fair use and fair dealing as limits, so a short clip used for commentary can survive a claim.

The same copyright notice on TikTok and on X

Most people who write to us have the same stolen clip on both apps. The law behind both notices is the same, but the steps around it are not:

The X side in full is in our guide to removing stolen work from X, and the X DMCA form step by step covers the fields. If the X copy has also been renamed to look like your account, check whether your name is still free with a Twitter username check or this handle checker before the copier takes the variants too.

TikTok vs X intellectual property decisions in the EU DSA database, 1-18 October 2026

What TikTok and X logged for intellectual property in October 2026

Platforms in the EU must log each moderation decision in the DSA Transparency Database. We searched it on 19 October 2026 for 1 to 18 October, filtered to the intellectual property category:

1–18 Oct 2026, EUTikTokX
All statements of reasons5,688,673393,107
Intellectual property6,764 (0.12%)1,865 (0.47%)
IP decisions started by a user notice (Art. 16)2920
IP decisions made without automation3,426410

Copyright is a sliver of what either platform logs: 0.12% of TikTok's decisions and 0.47% of X's. The other gap is in who reviews them. About half of TikTok's IP decisions were made without automation, while X marked 410 that way. Copyright notices sent under US law don't use the EU's Art. 16 channel, so these rows show only part of the picture. Even so, they suggest a person often reads a TikTok copyright complaint.

If a copyright claim hit your own TikTok video

Can you get copyrighted on TikTok? Yes. A valid claim removes the video and adds a strike. TikTok's strike article sets the limits: three copyright strikes means a permanent ban, each strike expires after 90 days, a burst of reports at once may count as one, and copyright and trademark strikes are counted apart. Two of each is not a ban. Three of one kind is.

Can you get copyrighted on TikTok LIVE? The IP Policy covers everything you share, LIVE included, so a rights holder can report a stream like any other content. Music is the usual cause. Business accounts are limited to the Commercial Music Library, which is cleared for that use.

There's no official TikTok copyright checker that clears a clip before you post. Third-party "tiktok copyright check" sites can match a song, but they can't grant a licence. The one first-party check comes afterwards: Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center, Account check, which lists any strikes on the account.

As for how to get around TikTok copyright, or how to get past copyright on TikTok, speeding up a song, mirroring the frame or adding a filter doesn't change who owns the work. The real ways past a claim are your own footage, licensed sounds, a fair-use argument, or a counter-notification if the claim is wrong. Inventing permission is what gets accounts banned. The same goes for reporting: removing someone else's account only works on real grounds, never as a weapon in a dispute.

How to delete a TikTok video you sent to someone

If you shared it in a direct message, press and hold the message and delete it. That removes it from your side of the chat. The other person's copy of the chat is not touched. If the video is your own post, deleting the post from your profile stops it playing wherever the link was shared, because the link now points to nothing.

You can't pull a video back from someone who downloaded it. If they repost it, you're the copyright owner, and the form above applies to them like anyone else.

When the trouble isn't copyright

Some readers come here because their X account looks hidden or blocked after a dispute, not because of a TikTok claim. Running a Twitter shadowban check shows whether X is limiting your reach, and the X rate limit messages explain the short lockouts that look like bans.

If X support is the next step, reaching X customer service through its forms and the X support addresses that still answer show which door fits. If the copier is on Instagram too, Instagram's report forms work without an account. For a new account on X, checking Twitter name availability and claiming an unused handle help you get your name back. For any other person on TikTok, reporting a whole TikTok account covers the profile-level report, and the truth about TikTok mass report bots explains why piling on reports backfires.

FAQ

Is there an official TikTok copyright checker?

No. TikTok offers no tool that tells you a clip is safe before you post it. What it does offer is Account check, under Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center, which shows strikes once they exist. For music, the sounds inside the app are the safer choice, and business accounts are held to the Commercial Music Library.

Can the uploader get my name from a TikTok copyright claim?

Yes, they can. The copyright form warns that your contact details may be shared with the person who posted the video, and TikTok's IP Policy says it may tell them the copyright owner's name. A plain rule report is different, because TikTok says it won't disclose who filed it. If that worries you, an agent or a lawyer can file in their own name.

How fast does TikTok act on a reported video?

Usually within hours. In TikTok's Q1 2026 enforcement data, 96.2% of removals that came from a report happened in under two hours, and 0.2% took longer than 24 hours. Copyright notices go through a separate intellectual property team, and TikTok publishes no clock for those.

Does a TikTok copyright strike affect my X account?

No. Strikes are counted by each platform on its own. TikTok bans an account at three copyright strikes inside 90 days, while X runs a repeat infringer policy with no published number. A notice filed on one app never reaches the other, so a video reposted to both needs two notices.

Can I report a TikTok video that copied my post on X?

Yes. The TikTok copyright form asks where your original came from, and one of the choices is outside TikTok. Paste the link to your X post in the 350-character box for the original, then add the TikTok links you're reporting. Only the owner or someone acting for them may file.

Does deleting the video remove a TikTok copyright strike?

No. TikTok's Help Center says deleting content doesn't remove a violation, so the strike stays until it expires after 90 days. If you think the claim was wrong, file a counter-notification from the notice in the app. Deleting it first also removes the video you'd be defending.

What happens if I send a false copyright claim on TikTok?

The form makes you sign three statements, including that the report is accurate and you're the owner or authorised. Under US copyright law, someone who knowingly misrepresents infringement in a notice can be liable for damages. TikTok also counts incomplete or inaccurate notices as invalid and doesn't act on them.
