How do you delete someone else's Instagram account, and why the same request ends differently on X

How do you delete someone else's Instagram account? You can't: only someone signed in can delete it, and Instagram says it can't delete a profile for you. How to delete someone Instagram account permanently comes down to Meta's decision on a report: impersonation, an under-age owner, a death in the family or a rule break. X accepts the same grounds but ends them differently.

Who can ask for someone else's Instagram account to be removed, and what X does in the same case

How do you delete someone else's Instagram account when you aren't the owner?

You give Meta a reason it accepts, and Meta decides. There's no form where you type a username and the profile disappears. Instagram's page on deleting a profile tells even locked-out owners, "For security reasons, we can't delete a profile for you." Which route you get depends on who you are to the account.

  • It copies you. Report it as pretending to be someone else, in the app or on the impersonation form with a photo of your ID.
  • It belongs to your child under 13. Use the under-age report. Instagram says it "will delete the account if we can't verify that the account is managed by someone who is old enough".
  • The owner has died. Immediate family can ask for removal with a birth or death certificate, or proof of authority over the estate. Anyone else can only ask for the profile to be memorialised.
  • It harasses, threatens or scams you. Report the posts and messages, then the account. Which Instagram report fits what the person did sorts the reasons.
  • You just want it gone. There's no route. Meta removes accounts that break its rules, and disliking an account isn't a rule break.

That list is also how to delete someone else's account on Instagram in the only sense that exists: you file, Meta acts. The forms behind the first three lines are in Instagram's report forms and which still load.

How to delete someone fake account on Instagram

Report it under the reason that matches what's fake about it. A profile copying a real person is impersonation. Meta's form says, "We can only act on reports from the person who's being impersonated or their authorized representative." If the fake copies your friend, your friend's report with their ID does more than ten from you.

A fake that copies nobody, such as a spam bot or an "investment mentor" with stock photos, goes in as spam or a scam. Report the account and its worst post: reporting a whole Instagram account covers the account screen and flagging a single Instagram post covers the post. Before you file, save the profile link as text, dated screenshots and any outside links it pushes.

The account isn't told who filed. Whether Instagram shows the account who reported it explains the exceptions, and undoing an Instagram report filed in error covers a report sent against the wrong profile.

How to delete someone else's Instagram account without password, and why having it doesn't help

Without the password there's nothing to press. With it, you'd be breaking Instagram's rules and, in most countries, the law. Instagram's deceased-profile page says, "It's always against our policies for someone to log in to another person's profile." That applies to grieving relatives too, which is why the removal route asks for certificates and not a login.

Signing in to an account that isn't yours is unauthorised access: the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, 18 U.S.C. § 1030, in the US, and section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in the UK. A password an ex once shared doesn't change that.

It also tends to fail. A deletion request sits for 30 days and the owner cancels it by logging back in. Instagram emails the account's address about new sign-ins, so the owner usually hears first. The guides that promise how to delete someone else's Instagram account from the outside are describing either a report or a break-in.

How to delete someone Instagram account permanently: which results are final?

Three results are final: the owner's own deletion once its 30 days pass, a removal after a death, and an under-age deletion. A disable by Meta is not final on the day it happens, because the owner can appeal.

Appeals often succeed. In Meta's Instagram DSA transparency report for January to June 2026, EU users filed 7,816,585 complaints about account suspensions or terminations and 2,838,533 were reversed, about 36%. An account removed on a weak report can be back within weeks. One removed on clear evidence usually stays down.

Who can ask on Instagram and on X, and what does each platform do?

Both platforms accept the same kinds of people. What happens afterwards differs.

CaseInstagramX
The owner has diedFamily can have it removed; anyone can ask to memorialise itFamily or the estate can have it deactivated; there's no memorial state
A child under 13Deleted if nobody proves an adult runs itLocked until a parent gives consent
ImpersonationOnly the person copied or their representativeThe person copied, a representative or a bystander
Rule-breaking accountAnyone can report; Meta disablesAnyone can report; X suspends

On X, a deceased person's account is deactivated and then follows the ordinary 30-day path to deletion; the same clock is why an X account past its 30-day deletion window can't be brought back. X never hands over access to anyone. If the account you want gone is an old one of your own, that's recovery. Start with the X account recovery routes, then finding the username of an old X account, recovering an X account when you don't know the handle or opening a locked X account, and delete it yourself once you're in.

How many accounts do Instagram and X remove, and how many start with a report?

Very few removals start with one person's notice. We counted the EU's DSA Transparency Database on 11 October 2026 for decisions logged from 11 September to 10 October 2026.

EU DSA records 11 Sep to 10 Oct 2026: Instagram account terminations and X suspensions, and how many followed a user notice
  • Instagram logged 6,745,225 account terminations. 1,000 followed a formal EU user notice under Article 16, about 1 in 6,745, and 10 came from trusted flaggers.
  • 244,605 of those terminations, about 3.6%, were logged as not automated. Instagram logged only 28 suspensions, so nearly every account decision it files is a termination.
  • X logged 595,498 account suspensions and 48 terminations out of 645,140 decisions. 10,835 of the suspensions, about 1.8%, were not automated, and X filed none as following an Article 16 notice.

In-app reports aren't logged as Article 16 notices, so they are in the large number, not the small one. Even so, the scale shows that most accounts come down because the platform's systems found them. A report helps when it shows a reviewer something specific that those systems missed.

What do "delete any account" sellers actually do, and what happens to buyers?

They send a pile of reports or a phishing link, and neither deletes anything. Identical reports against an account that breaks no rule give a reviewer nothing to act on. The phishing version sends the target a fake copyright notice and waits for a password, which is account theft.

Buyers carry the risk. On X, filing reports in bulk is platform manipulation, and the reporting accounts are the ones that get actioned. The grounds X uses to suspend accounts include it, and keeping your own X account clear of a ban lists the habits that trigger it. If it has already happened, the order is recovering a suspended X account, the X unban process and, for the worst case, an appeal against a permanent X suspension. A quieter penalty is lost reach: see getting a shadow ban on X lifted and appealing an X shadow ban.

Real cases go through official forms. Fake accounts that flood your replies are covered in dealing with bot accounts on X, and an account threatening to publish your details in X blackmail and doxxing cases.

What happens to the username once a fake account is gone?

It doesn't come to you automatically on either platform. On X, a suspended account keeps its handle, which is why an X username showing as unavailable often has no visible profile behind it. Whether it ever frees up depends on how X treats inactive accounts.

Check before you plan around it: checking one X username, checking handle variants on X and an X name availability check each take a minute. If the name is free, claiming the X handle yourself stops the next impersonator. If it isn't, see requesting an inactive username on X and getting a username that's taken on X.

Be careful with anyone selling the name back to you. X's rules ban username sales, and the people offering "deleted" handles are often the same ones selling account deletion. Read buying a handle on X, X handle marketplaces and X usernames offered for sale first, or pick from X usernames that are still open.

FAQ

Can Instagram delete someone else's account if I ask?

Not on request. Instagram removes or disables an account when a report shows impersonation, an under-age owner, a deceased owner with family proof, or a breach of its rules. It says it can't delete a profile even for a locked-out owner.

How many reports does it take to delete an Instagram account?

There's no number. Each report is checked against the rules, and many reports of an account that breaks none change nothing. One report with clear evidence does more.

Can I delete my child's Instagram account?

If your child is under 13, use Instagram's under-age report and Instagram will delete the account unless an adult proves they run it. From 13 up, the account is the teenager's own to delete; Instagram's supervision tools let a parent set limits on it.

Can a fake Instagram account be removed without an account of my own?

Yes, if it copies you. Instagram's impersonation form works signed out and asks for a photo of your government ID. It acts only for the person being copied or their authorised representative.

Is it illegal to log in and delete someone's Instagram?

In most countries, yes. It's unauthorised access under laws such as the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the UK Computer Misuse Act 1990, even if you were once given the password.

Can you get someone else's X account deleted?

Only through X's own routes. A family member or the estate can have a deceased person's account deactivated, an under-13 account gets locked, and impersonation or rule breaks lead to suspension. X never gives access to someone else's account.
